Announcement

Look for posting to resume usual frequency today or tomorrow. Things have been pretty busy around here since returning from Michigan in light of the following news:

On New Year's Eve, The Lady Exile and I were engaged to be married! We expect the wedding to be in the summer of 2007, and I'm sure that we will need any extra time we can get to plan a Michigan wedding (both of our families -- immediate and extended -- are there) from here.

This is one of those increasingly rare occasions when I am at a bit of a loss for words in light of my jubilation. She is my best friend and has been for what feels like forever. This next step in sharing our lives with each other is something that we are both excited about.

By the way, being rendered speechless is proof positive of true love!!

Well what took you long to propose? It's been clear to me you two are meant for each other.

Congratulations and give each other a hug for me.

Congratulations! You indeed are having a fantastic year!

As one who has been married for a while, I feel compelled to give some unsolicited advice. Get used to it. You will get a lot of unsolicited advice now that you're engaged. The only other time in life you will get more will be if you ever decide to have kids. This advice will usually come from those without kids.

At some point, when least expected, you're wife is bound to ask you "What are you thinking?"

I think that it is wise to have a series of answers filed away in the back of your mind for just such a situation.

What you want to avoid is a situation in which the two of you are together during a quiet moment, she asks the question, and you answer with something like
"That scene in Star Trek II, when Ricardo Maltabon was about to die, and he is pledging to track down Captain Kirk to the end of the universe....that was a cool scene...".

No, it's best to have something prepared for such a moment.

Hee. Would you believe, Kevin, that The Exile frequently asks me this very question, and I have been known to give quite similar answers:

"I was just wondering what lip gloss Veronica Mars was wearing two episodes ago."

"I was just thinking about Gauguin. Do you think he's overrated?"

"I was just wondering how hard it would be to learn sign language."

"I was just reflecting on how much Ann Coulter looks like an ugly drag queen."

He's used to it. Trust me, I fully understand when I ask and his answers are just as weird as mine usually are.

LOL!

It's nice that you're both on the same wavelegnth.

Ann Coulter is way too skinny to look like a man in drag. She scares me nonetheless.

Most excellent news! Congrats to you both.

Kevin is right - you're about to get inundated with unsolicited advice.

I think I'll save my unsolicited advice for the next lull in unsolicited advice, so I can fill the void.

I'm just generous that way.

Summer, 2007. Sounds to me like a splendid time to get married!
